Community in Corfu

In the courtyard behind the Synagogue of Corfu, Greece:

(above) A shulchan (table) where bodies would be ritually purified for burial.

The walled up doorway in the background is the former entrance to the mikvah (ritual bath) for the community. The mikvah is no longer in operation.

(below) The bombed out remnants of the school behind the Synagogue. Until WWII, the building was a thriving Jewish school for the community.

The poles in the foreground are for the sukkah in the courtyard of the Synagogue.
